Most of you reading this know the basic facts. Ammon Bundy has led a group of protestors to take over the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge near Burns, Oregon. Protesting something is an accepted practice in America, that's a given. Crowds walking along a freeway and shutting down traffic during the Vietnam War, and the famous Civil Rights marches of the 1960's are good examples. In those cases, people with conscience were voicing their opinions on things that affected a great deal of Americans on a national level. Most of the time, they didn't carry assault weapons while doing so, and they were sometimes arrested, or beaten down by police. But in the end, they succeeded.
The Malheur situation is totally different. This is not a protest about civil rights, or a useless war, but a protest supporting a couple of criminals who were sentenced to Federal prison for arson. People who had run-ins with the Feds before, and had served time over those crimes. The Bundy family says that wildfires they set were for clearing land or other purposes. The Feds say the Bundy's were merely trying to cover up illegal hunting they had done on Bureau of Land Management property. It's complicated, but the response to all this by the Bundy family is WRONG.
And here is why:
First, they decided to bring weapons, and recruit OTHERS to bring weapons. Second, although they claim they are not putting anyone in danger, reports are out that some of the protestors brought their kids along with them. This is not a protest for some higher moral calling. This is nothing but treason. They have also said that if law enforcement tries to stop them, they will respond with force. This is also treason, not protest. True protestors let themselves be hauled off to jail, and then let the public decide whether the issue they are protesting has merit. And this approach often works. What the Bundy's are doing is irresponsible and foolish, puts innocent people in danger, and bears no resemblance to protests regarding Vietnam, Civil Rights, or anything else Americans have protested about over the decades. This is a shameful act that makes true believers of our Constitution cringe.
Americans examining this situation should be reminded of something. Your right to PEACEFUL protest is supported by the deaths of millions of your fellow citizens going back all the way to the American Revolution. Those people, patriots good and true, gave their lives for our Constitution, something we have stood behind for more than two hundred years.
You should never forget that fact, because it matters. Don't support groups who twist your inherent right to protest into an ugly thing.
What is going on in Oregon right now is not 'protesting,' but something else.
It shames anyone who has ever served for freedom, or engaged in legitimate protest.
