Newsvine Column As a Regular Podcast

Picture used in an episode

advertisement

'Straight Talk,' the first-ever podcast of a regular column at Newsvine, is an initial success. EDIT: Well, not the FIRST. I just heard Dom Pody was the original Newsvine podcaster. I guess I'll have to settle for second.

The stats below show the real-time traffic to the podcast after one, two, and the first three hours. They have increased dramatically since then.

Page views 14 19 33

Downloads 14 22 51

Unique visitors 4 13 30

Subscribers 6 22 27

How it was done:

I opened an account with Pod-o-Matic and set up a homepage with the same name as my column here at Newsvine. I filled out all the appropriate information, and made sure to insert links and references leading back to my Newsvine column. Then, I read selected articles over the air that I've already published at Newsvine, trying to insert a little more drama into them than is possible through text alone.

One good thing about podcasts is that they are becoming more popular all the time, and users are picking the ones they like by subscribing, which they can do with a click through iTunes, or any of the major podcatchers.

UPDATE: Since I went live with this Newsvine-based podcast, I've been picking up more Link Love messages from Newsvine. I encourage you to try a podcast based on your articles at NV. Check out my podcast first, to get some hints. Your profile and homepage entries at PodoMatic accepts standard code, making it easy to link viewers back to your column at Newsvine. You can imagine the possibilities. Don't forget to sign your podcast up with all the feeds. PodoMatic has an easy list.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Dang, that is weird, that Manson Girl turning 60 on the far right in the middle picture with the messed up hair-do looks really familiar. Wasn't that that lady that Cliff was always talking about ? Dang I am rotten with names...

Aw man... this brings back such great memories of Dom Pody's Vinecast (any one else remember that great show?). I'm a horrible podcaster (just listen to a few of my shows and you'll see I'm not just being humble), but keep it up. Maybe you could even restart (again) the Vinecast.

I have always been interested in the Manson Murders. I well remember what outrage and shock they caused, even here, in the U.K.

I agree, Robert, it would be difficult to know if any of the girls are up to being released. Two of our most notorious Murderers from that era, Myra Hindley, and her boyfriend, were banged up for life, with Hindley dying in prison.

Ian Brady, her boyfriend, was sent to a top security hospital for the insane, and, is still behind bars. (I think). Unless he died as well, can't really remember.

I like your podcast, very well done, it puts a whole new aspect to your Column.

Ian Brady, from Wiki:

'He was sentenced to life imprisonment in May 1966 and more than 40 years later is still imprisoned; since November 1985 he has been in a mental hospital. It is almost certain that he will never be released, and since 1999 has been trying to gain the right to take his own life through hunger strikes'

I didn't know about Vinecast. Guess that means I'll have to settle for second place. My hat goes off to Dom Pody.

It wasn't a column reading like your's, so you're first on that one. Dom's was more of a roundtable panel discussion.

I'm sure I'll find some time this year to attend one of those meetups. Damn though...I am so busy all the time. I have to run a magazine (Escape Velocity), a small press, (Adventure Books of Seattle), do my stuff for the NW Science Fiction Society, and then...I have a regular day job running a housecleaning business. Want a chuckle? See our official site for the cleaning biz.

Hey Kathy,
On the June 10th Mtg. Will that be at the same place ?

Hopefully that one I can make, I had to miss the last one, I have some nasty medical issues and am pretty much grounded for at least several weeks.

I have had to get a cleaning service, not sure if they cover Lynnwood or not, but these people are super Amazing Maids

Gayla and I still do some houses personally, but only customers we've had for years. And no more than one per day. Do we go to Redmond? Not any more, unless it is a one-time-only or a clean by special arrangement. Too far from Auburn. We used to, though...back in the good old days when we first started.

Hard to believe when we look back on it now, but we used to do three homes a day and take home a measly $200 or less. Now we get more than that on a single home. But when we leave, people know we've been there. (laughs)

Gayla is releasing a book soon called 'Neat and Tidy', about how to start one of these businesses up and avoid the usual pitfalls.

And I need to update that website. I haven't done much to it (except adjust prices) since 2004.
